The Secret Recipe for Creativity
By Diana Yousfi
Why are some people so creative? Sometimes, you meet a person that just seems to have a spark of creative genius in everything that they do, while other times, you meet people who are devoid of even the slightest hint of anything that could possibly be considered creative. Which kind of person are you? Are you the creative genius or do you struggle to reach your full creativity potential? If you are one of the many people who struggle with creativity, the good news is that the laws of creativity are by no means set in stone. Everyone can reach a higher level of creativity if they are willing to learn the secret ingredients.
What's the secret?
How do some people get such wonderful, original, and crazy ideas? While the brain and whether you are a person who uses more of the right or left side does play a factor in creative ability, there are a few tools that everyone can use to enhance their creativity. These tool make up a special recipe for creativity, which contains the following ingredients:
1. A Pinch of Absurdity
These three ingredients combined make up the best recipe for creativity. People who are creative think up many new ideas because they are willing to think outside of the box. They grab an idea (quite possibly an absurd idea) and, instead of dismissing it, they explore it. The exploration of that idea triggers another idea, which triggers another, and before you know it, a whole chain reaction is set into motion. Some of the most brilliant ideas come from absurd ones, which is why the recipe calls for a pinch of absurdity. If you want to be creative, you have to be willing to explore the ridiculous ideas. You also must have an imagination. If you are not an imaginative person by nature, don't worry, you can always develop a better imagination with the help of the last ingredient, which is practice.
Now that you know the ingredients, it is time to begin the recipe.
1. This step will require the pinch of absurdity. Take a flittering thought that comes into your head. Just admit it, everyone has random and sometimes weird thoughts that pop into their heads at one time or another. Most people just don't tell anyone about those thoughts and usually dismiss them as nonsense. Well, instead of dismissing your thought, hang on to it. Think about it, explore it, and see where it takes you.
2. Now it is time to add some imagination. Read fictional books. If you want to increase your creativity, you need to broaden your imagination and reading fictional stories is a great way to do that. Why? Because there are very few other venues that specialize in creativity more so than storytelling. Storytellers are masters of creativity. That is their art and they actually make a living off of it!
3. Now you will add the most important ingredient, which is practice. Practice thinking about something impossible. Imagine what it would be like to see cars flying around town and try to picture that scene in your mind. In order to reach your full creative potential, you have to let yourself wonder about things. Many people may wonder about something during the day, but push the thought aside because they feel like they're too busy to think about it at the time. While it would not be advisable for you to go around "wondering" and daydreaming all day, you should allow yourself to wonder as often as reasonably possible. One of the best times to practice wondering about things is during the time of semi-consciousness that comes at night when you are not quite awake, but not quite asleep either. This is a great time to think about any creative problems because your mind is more at liberty to explore solutions than during the busy day.
This recipe for creativity is simple, yet effective. Although the above practices may seem strange, they will help you to develop your creative potential. The object of creativity is not to become a daydreaming lunatic. The advantage of creativity is the ability to think up ideas that no one else has thought up before. If you are creating a play or writing a book, you want it to be original. You want to go where no one has gone before. In order to do that, you have to practice being creative, which means exploring new ideas.
On a more practical level, creativity may help you in your business, or with your work. You might be able to think up new marketing strategies or you may come up with a genius idea to fix something that has been annoying everyone at the office. More importantly, you might be able to contribute to humanity. Imagine how absurd the idea must have been originally, to create a flying transport vehicle that could fly through the clouds and carry people across states and even continents! It still sounds absurd! Nevertheless, over 1 billion people do it every day.
Creativity has changed the world and if you are willing to take the time to develop your full creative potential, who knows what you can accomplish? You might be the next person to invent something as important as the car or airplane. You just might be the next person who changes the world.
